xbox 360- what's the difference between an HDMI cable and a 6 component cable?

this is on my xbox 360. I ask this because I have both cables. The hdmi telegraph is clearly much better looking then the component cables. Yet I'm reading online that they both affirm 720p - 1080p. So why is it the hdmi looks better? I have a 32inch
