I have a very small HD, nearly full. Can I transfer everything to an external HD, if so how? External HD 500GB?

I need to transfer everything that I have in my computer HD to an external HD. Computer can not take a larger HD, internally, I require to transfer everything, OS, programs, data etc. can it be done, if so, how? External HD is 500GB. Thanksgiving owing
