Whenever I connect my Western Digital 1 TB external HD to my PC, my internet slows down. Anyone know why?

My downloads are a consistent 90kb/s-150kb/s. But the moment I connect my external HD, it goes down to 50 kb/s even 30 kb/s. After I disjoin the HD, it goes back to normal.
