Is it possible to play a regular dvd on a blu-ray dvd player?

I heard that they've stopped making hd dvd players. I have multiple dvds that wouldnt ever be made into blu ray disks. would i still be clever to play them on a blu-ray player if they stopped making legal dvd players?
